A journal in Notion has one problem: the blank page. You open the database, press New, and the cursor blinks at you. The entries that get written are the ones where something asked a question first. “What did you do with your afternoon?” is easier to answer than an empty title.
The app I am considering is that question, on your phone, once a day. Open it in the evening and there is today’s prompt, a mood to pick, a place for one photo, and a text field. Save, and it is a row in your Notion journal database with the date, the mood as a select, the photo in a Files property and your words in the page. A year later the app shows you what you wrote on this day, pulled from the same database.
Fast Actions can do a journal form today with mood, tags and a note, and a journal in Notion from your phone shows the set-up. The one-entry-per-day rule, the prompts and on-this-day are what a form cannot do.
How it would work
- A separate app with its own database template: date, mood (select), prompt (text), photo (files), tags (multi-select), plus the page body for the entry.
- Before creating today’s row the app checks whether one exists for the date and opens that one instead, so you get one entry per day and can add to it. This is the one place the app would edit an existing page, and only its own row.
- Prompts are a list inside the app, rotated by date, with the option to write your own. No AI generates them.
- On-this-day queries the database for the same month and day in earlier years. With a few years of entries that is a handful of requests, well inside Notion’s limits.
- Photos go through Notion’s file upload, downscaled to stay under the 5 MiB free-workspace limit. Offline entries wait in a queue, like in the other apps.
What it would not do: encrypt the journal or keep it private from Notion. The entries live in your workspace with the same sharing as everything else there. Day One and Apple’s Journal app are the choice if a locked diary matters more than a Notion database.
Is this built?
No. I wrote this page because “notion journal” is something people already find Instant Note for, and I want to know whether the ask is a real journal app or just a quicker way to write a line. Press the button below if it is the app.
